What is the Alien Name Generator?
An alien name is meant to sound like it grew up somewhere that is not Earth. This generator throws out invented, deliberately unpronounceable combinations — odd consonant clusters, hyphenated syllables, the occasional apostrophe — so each result reads as genuinely extraterrestrial.
How to use it
Use it to name a sci-fi character, a species, a mascot, or a sci-fi-themed handle. Heart any result you like to add it to your keepers, copy the winner in one tap, or download the full shortlist before you leave.
What makes a good alien name?
Alien names should feel invented rather than borrowed — odd consonant runs, unexpected apostrophes and sounds that are hard to say on purpose. Anything that reads as a human first name breaks the illusion.
Tips for better results
Use the customiser to supply your own syllables and a planet, then press Suggest to see how they combine. Say the result out loud; if it sounds like a surname from your street, generate another.
Where these names come from
Every alien name on Smerble is built from its own word lists and patterns. The generator mixes them at random, and a no-repeat bag system means the same combination will not come up twice in a row. Everything runs in your browser as you click, so nothing is sent to us.
Frequently asked questions
Is the alien name generator free to use?
Yes. Every Smerble generator is free, with no account, no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. Open the Customize panel on this page, type your own options separated by commas, and press Suggest. Any field you leave blank is filled in for you.
What kind of names will I get?
Invented syllable pairs, often hyphenated or joined with an apostrophe, plus ranks, traits and planet references for science-fiction stories, games and roleplay.
Can I use the names commercially?
You can use the names you generate however you like. For a business, product or brand, check that the domain and trademark are available first, since Smerble does not verify those.
