What is the Band Name Generator?
A band name has one job: be easy to say and easy to remember. This tool serves up options across that range, from throwaway garage-band fun to something worth printing on a tour poster. The customiser above can also build ideas around your own words.
How to use it
Use it for a new group, a side project, a playlist or a fictional act — or to break a name deadlock before a first gig. Heart the standouts, copy one, or download the shortlist.
What makes a good band name?
A strong band name is short, sayable and a little strange — it has to work shouted across a venue and printed small on a poster. Most great ones are two or three words that collide in an unexpected way.
Tips for better results
Start with the customiser: feed in your hometown, a colour and an animal and press Suggest. Read each name out loud, then check it is not already a working band before you print any posters.
Where these names come from
Every band name on Smerble is built from its own word lists and patterns. The generator mixes them at random, and a no-repeat bag system means the same combination will not come up twice in a row. Everything runs in your browser as you click, so nothing is sent to us.
Frequently asked questions
Is the band name generator free to use?
Yes. Every Smerble generator is free, with no account, no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. Open the Customize panel on this page, type your own options separated by commas, and press Suggest. Any field you leave blank is filled in for you.
What kind of names will I get?
Mostly two- and three-word combinations — invented pairs, place names and animal or weather images — in styles that suit everything from garage rock to electronic.
Can I use the names commercially?
You can use the names you generate however you like. For a business, product or brand, check that the domain and trademark are available first, since Smerble does not verify those.
